Appointment of a new ad personam member to the IB Council of Foundation
The IB
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation registered in Geneva, Switzerland. It is a recognized leader in the field of international education, encouraging students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens. Founded in 1968, we currently work with 1,894 schools in 124 countries to develop and offer three challenging programmes to more than 487,000 students aged 3 to 19 years: the Primary Years Programme for children aged 3 to 12, the Middle Years Programme for students aged 11 to 16 and the Diploma Programme for students aged 16 to 19.
The Council of Foundation
The Council of Foundation is the governing body of the IB. It comprises 17 members from different parts of the world and conducts its business in English. The council meets in person at least three times a year in different parts of the world and has further contact via one or two telephone conferences. A council member spends approximately 70 hours per year attending meetings of the council and participating in one or more of its committees. Appointments are for three years with a possibility of extension for a maximum of three additional years. Economy travel and other expenses are reimbursed. No professional fee is paid.
Responsibilities of the Council of Foundation include the following:
- It maintains full legal and fiscal responsibility for the Foundation’s business and affairs
- It approves annual budgets
- It appoints a Director General
- It ensures the autonomy and integrity of the assessment of the programmes
- It adopts mission statements, strategic plans and general policies
- It establishes subordinate bodies with specific functions
Profile for this appointment
The person we are seeking for the current vacancy as a member of the Council of Foundation should:
- preferably be an IB graduate or an IB parent
- bring relevant professional experience to the governance of an organization with international needs (legal, financial, communication, human resources, etc.)
- have a sufficient level of English to enable participation in meetings
- have commitment (but not necessarily experience) in international education
- be prepared to devote the time required to prepare for and attend meetings
- be able to advise about governance of the IB during a period of rapid growth.
