IB Asia Pacific Professional Development:
Guidelines for providers of IB-related training activities
There is an increasing number of experienced and knowledgeable people and groups who are interested in supporting the professional development needs of IB schools. While recognizing that each regional office is responsible for negotiating specific agreements with external professional development providers, the IB has established a policy regarding “Recognition of externally provided professional development” that sets out the overarching principles governing recognition and deployment.
If your educational institution or group wishes to formally enlist the services of a provider for an IB-related professional development activity, please respect the following guidelines.
1. Contact the IB Asia Pacific Regional Office: Groups seeking to enlist the services of an IB representative, IB-trained workshop leader, IB chief / assistant examiner or experienced IB practitioner need to first contact the IB Asia Pacific Regional Office. While this is not an “IB-approved” event, we can assist you in securing the appropriate person for your needs, and support your event under the following guidelines.
2. Clarify the status of the activity: To avoid confusion, the status of IB-related activities should be featured clearly in any published communication or promotion for the event. “IB-related” professional development activities are those that support and/or promote further understanding of the IB programmes. These activities are not coordinated through the IB Asia Pacific Regional Office. They are supplementary to the programme-specific professional development required for IB authorization and evaluation purposes. They are developed, organised and delivered by parties beyond the scope and supervision of the IB Asia Pacific Regional Office. These activities should not replicate IB-approved activities in any way.
3. Respect IB intellectual property: As a not-for-profit organisation, the use of IB intellectual property beyond the scope of IB-approved events must be not-for-profit. The organization reserves the right to take action against any parties using IB intellectual property and copyright material for commercial gain. For more information, please see rules and policy for use of IB intellectual property.
4. Do not put IB-trained service providers at risk: Institutions and groups must respect the terms and conditions for IB-trained service providers:
a. IB-trained workshop leaders’ terms and conditions specifically state: “Requests for the services of workshop leaders must be made through the IB Asia-Pacific regional office. Workshop Leaders are required to direct all requests through the regional office. Any training invitations from elsewhere (e.g. other IB regional offices, individual schools, organisations, etc.) must be discussed with the IB Asia-Pacific regional office.” (Item 8)
b. IB-trained assistant examiners’ terms and conditions specifically state: “An assistant examiner must not communicate directly with candidates or teachers of an IB authorized school offering the Diploma Programme unless requested to do so by the assessment director, or his or her nominee (excepting an IB school at which the assistant examiner may be a teacher or other member of the faculty)... If an assistant examiner is asked by a school’s
