Primary Years Programme
Interest in PYP continues to grow in the region. To date, we have:
Interested Schools:
(With Letter of Intent) 99
Candidate schools: 101
Authorized schools: 78
Professional Development
Inschool workshops that are offered through the regional office are those which address the Standards and Practices. An inschool workshop is for ALL staff who teach PYP. Therefore, all subject specific workshops
e.g. Math in the PYP, Reading, Writing and Inquiry and so on, which are 'regional workshop' modules will not be offered to schools. Within the structure of an inschool request, the PYPC may discuss with the workshop leaders to address some aspects of inquiry and therefore, this may be with reference to the transdisciplinary nature of the curriculum. School administration should strategically plan for attendance at regional workshops which address subject approaches in PYP. These areas would be possibly linked to a curriculum focus in the school and 'lead' teachers could attend the relevant workshop and then develop ongoing professional development beyond this within the school.
It is the regional office’s responsibility to ensure all schools are well supported in the understanding of the Standards and the application of these practices within the school. These are the focus for all school
visits and therefore, the ongoing development of the Practices is critical. It is the Standards and Practices that evaluated closely and form the foundation of commendations and recommendations.
Workshops
From 2007 more focused alternatives to PYP Introductory 1 Workshops, i.e. ‘General Introduction for Administrators and PYPC’ and ‘General Introduction for Teachers’ will be offered. These workshops are for those 'new' to PYP. Those 'new' may well be in candidate schools. It is imperative that all administrators and PYP coordinators have some foundation professional development in PYP.
In 2007 another new workshop ‘Pedagogical Leadership for Candidate and Authorised Schools’ will be offered. This has been refined to meet the needs of those leadership teams in schools at this stage of PYP implementation. Please can school coordinators ensure that school details are regularly updated on IBNET.
PYP Coordinator Handbook
Please ensure all PYP coordinators have the current publication 2006-7 as a guide for their role and the management of PYP.
Requesting in-school workshops
PYP coordinators are asked to ensure that they are certain about dates they have chosen for in school workshops BEFORE they are submitted to the office. While we are well aware that unforeseen events may occur which could cause a change of dates, it is almost impossible to change dates for the workshop once we have confirmed it with the workshop leaders. Workshop leaders need to organise release from their own schools and other school visits are often organized in conjunction with the workshop. If you need to change dates, a new form will need to be submitted and there is no guarantee that we will be able to access workshop leaders for the revised date unless six months notice is given.
Our Thanks
It has been very evident in our travels that some incredible collaboration and support for the programme implementation is taking place in this region.
The PYP team would like to sincerely thank :
- those of you who have so generously shared ideas and resources with each other and given your valuable time to provide support and give advice to colleagues implementing the programme, particularly within subregions and networks
- administration who have willingly provided release time for workshop leaders to facilitate IB Asia-Pacific professional development and school visits
- workshop leaders and visiting teams for the hours spent collaborating, creating, preparing, presenting and advising - your energy and expertise have an incredible impact on teaching and learning in this dynamic region
- and to those of you who continue to support and inspire us on a daily basis, by your commitment to the programme in your schools, by your innovation and desire to keep improving, and by your words of encouragement to us.
