Community Service leads to CIS International Student Awards
Lea Duplessis (Grade 12 Diploma
Student) and Yashvardhan Rajan (Grade
9MYP Student) of Ecole Mondiale World
School, Mumbai, India have been
awarded The CIS International
Student Award that recognizes the
contributions of students to school and
community improvement. The projects
were student-initiated and supported by
the school.
Lea likes to take photographs and decided to turn her creative
endeavor into a service venture. To raise funds for her project
she baked cup cakes and brownies and sold them after school.
All the money earned from the cupcake sale was used to
enlarge the photographic prints.
The photographs were framed and displayed as a separate
exhibition during the school Arts Fest in March 2008. Her work,
exhibiting images from different cultures, e.g. China, India, Sri
Lanka and Turkey, was well received. The venture raised Rs.
36,000/- and the proceeds were donated in the form of art
materials and money to Each One Teach One (NGO) to promote
art learning.
Yashvardhan, a member of the Interact
Club at Ecole Mondiale, initiated a Blood
Donation Camp at the school. He
contacted, with the help of his parents,
The Raheja Hospital Blood Bank to carry
out the blood donation procedures. The
Interact Club members made posters and
informed the school community about the
event. Yashvardhan organized times and
duties for all the fellow volunteers so that
there was a balanced number of helpers
at all times. The event attracted 53 donors.
