Japan and Korea
Sub-Regional Meeting in Beijing
I would like to thank Kevin Baker, Principal of Seoul Foreign School, for his leadership during the sub-regional meeting for the Association of IB Schools in Japan and Korea at the 23rd IB Asia Pacific Regional Conference.
From this sub-region, over fifty educators who represented three schools in Korea and fourteen schools in Japan as well as three schools in Taiwan gathered in Beijing. The conference not only stimulated our hearts and minds, but also provided the participants with an opportunity to network and share expertise, thoughts and ideas. Gyeonggi Suwon International School, Seoul Foreign School and Taejon Christian International School were from Korea while Kaohsiung American School, Taipei American School and Taipei European School were from Taiwan. The fourteen schools from Japan were Canadian Academy, Fukuoka International School, Hiroshima International School, K. International School Tokyo, Kyoto International School, Osaka International School, Ritsumeikan Uji High School, Seisen International School, St Mary’s International School, St. Maur International School, Tamagawa Academy K-12, Tokyo International School, Tsukuba International School and Yokohama International School.
DP Coordinators’ Meeting at Katoh Gakuen
On 22 September DP Coordinators met at Katoh Gakuen as Craig Sutton, DP Coordinator at Katoh Gakuen and chair of the DP Coordinators’ Group hosted the Fall DP Coordinators’ meeting at his school. In addition to the sharing and promoting the job-alikes among schools, the meeting included a presentation on Language Acquisition by Dr Mike Bostwick, Director of Katoh Gakuen.
PYP East Asia Network Group Meeting
On 10 October Hiroshima International School hosted the fall PYP East Asia Network Group meeting which Clarence Coombs, chair of the PYP East Asia Network Group and the PYP Coordinator at Osaka International School organized. There were principals and PYP coordinators who represented two schools in Korea and nine schools in Japan. The group discussed issues such as the use of the planner and unit by single subject teachers, new science and social studies scope and sequence, language policy, etc.
Fall MYP East Asia Network Group Meeting
On 30 October K. International School hosted the MYP East Asia Network Group meeting which was organized by Andrew Hancock, chair of the group and Deputy Head/MYP Coordinator at Tokyo International School. In addition to the above members, Curtis Beaverford, IB Asia Pacific MYP Regional Manager and Caroline Rennie, MYP Coordinator at Osaka IS attended the fall MYP East Asia Network Group meeting. The discussion was very helpful and informative and covered such aspects as AOI, planning documents, student exchange, meeting costs, community workshops, and job-alikes.
