Cambodia

This quarter has seen a lot of activity at the Project. September was filled with teacher training workshops for the mentor teachers. In total, three weeks of workshops were held for 115 mentor teachers. The focus of these workshops was teaching Social Studies, particularly mapping skills. In addition to the usual teaching team of Ron, Annie, Soeun and Channan, we were ably assisted by David Meakin from Singapore during the first session and by Lynne Ord and Dayle Van Zanten from Ivanhoe Grammar School, Melbourne, during the third week. These volunteer teachers contributed greatly to the workshops with their expertise and enthusiasm.

A further three-day workshop was held for 24 teacher college teachers and the school directors. We took this group to visit the International School of Phnom Penh for a day. The purpose of this visit was to have the participants focus on pedagogy, not on the physical amenities. They were each given an Observation Form to guide their visit. The visit was a huge success and the participants returned eager to implement some of the ideas into their programmes. Everyone prepared three priorities that they would like to implement this year.

Physical improvements continued in September and October funded by individual and Partner School contributions. Two toilet blocks were completely renovated for female student teachers using funds contributed by Betsy Ramsay and Ted Currie from Orillia, Canada. New toilets and urinals were built at Kampon Samnagn and Krapeuha using funds contributed by Queenwood School for Girls, Sydney.  Toilet renovations will continue this quarter at the other schools using these funds.

The IBAP Annual Regional Conference in Beijing was a high point for the Project. Ouch Soeun, Project Coordinator, made a presentation at one of the plenary sessions and participated in two breakout sessions. Each of the Partner Schools now has a CD copy of this Powerpoint presentation.

In November, Renaissance College, Hong Kong, is sending 12 students to teach some English classes and paint two classrooms. Funding will be left to complete the renovations after they leave. Steven Reid is leading this group.

As 2008 comes to a close, a large contingent from Ivanhoe Grammar School, Sydney, will visit the Project. Chris Carolane is leading a group of teachers, students and alumni and Debbie Sukarna is leading a group of grade 6 students and parents – approximately 50 people in total. Their goal is to teach English, paint and renovate eight classrooms and paint two murals on school yard walls cooperatively with Cambodian children. A very ambitious endeavour!
