Quarter Three, 2006

Middle Years Programme

We would like to wish our colleagues in schools on a Northern Hemisphere academic year calendar a great start to the new year.

Somerset College Queensland Australia was the site for the first MYP Level three Intercultural Awareness workshop presented in the Asia Pacific region. Patrick Ritter, associate MYP regional manager was the workshop facilitator. The “pilot” of this different workshop model was well received.  Nicole Erlich from the University of Queensland also graciously hosted two sessions dealing with the latest academic research in Evolutionary Psychology. Much of the workshop was focused on current research done in Cognitive Psychology, Evolutionary Psychology and Anthropology and drew on the work of Stephen Pinker, Donald Brown, Jared Diamond  and others. With a nod of thanks to our PYP colleagues, the twenty-four MYP teachers from across Australia took part in an Inquiry field trip to Inala (outside of Brisbane).  Inala is home to a large Vietnamese community and is also experiencing an influx of new arrivals from other countries as well. As such it was fertile ground for an inquiry into how our communities can become living classrooms.

For MYP Coordinators – please update information on IBIS for new heads of school, programme coordinators and all staff accounts for OCC access.

Schools should have received the new 2006-2007 coordinator handbook and new teacher support materials for Technology and Language B.

Visits to a number of schools in the region by Li Bin and Patrick have revealed some very impressive work being done by teachers in MYP (authorized and candidate schools alike). We encourage teachers to post these examples of MYP unit and lessons plans and assessment tasks on the respective subject resources pages on the OCC. And ...as always…get on the forum on a regular basis.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Hanoi in October.
